a year ago today my grandmother died. this is her best friend Annie, the smartest and wittiest 90 year old I know. we both miss her beyond words. it is a tough day today

the past

i shot this picture on new years eve in berlin. it must have been about an hour after midnight into the year 2011. my friends were facing the waterfront glancing at the bright fireworks. i was looking the other direction, taking a picture of what was behind me.

I cannot tell why I like this picture so much. Maybe it is that special atmosphere in big cities in the evening when you walk in less crowded suburbs and feel very calm and although there are millions of people around you you manage to find a bubble of peace.
